Archaeologists studies show the age of Zakimi Castle to be over 600 years old.  A human chain was employed to dismantle Yamada Castle which is located about four miles North.  The smaller stones were passed hand to hand and the larger stones were rolled on logs. Because of a shortage of manpower, Gosamaru, the lord of Zakimi, enslaved the inhabitants of Amamio-shima and the surrounding islands to build his castle at Zakimi.
